The Edgewood Mustangs stunned the top-ranked South Putnam Eagles Friday night in a double-overtime thriller, earning a 31-30 victory that will be remembered as one of the program’s biggest wins in recent years. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, came into the matchup with one of the most explosive offenses in the state, and outgained Edgewood 393-267 in total yards. However, the Mustangs refused to back down, leaning on grit, toughness, and clutch execution in critical moments to stay in the fight and ultimately earn the win. Edgewood’s defense, though tested, forced two turnovers and held strong when the pressure was at its highest. The Mustang offense showed balance and resilience throughout the night. Junior quarterback Braylon Linerode (#18) passed for 124 yards and a touchdown, including one of the game’s biggest plays: a 37 yard strike to Sophomore William Hosey to set up Kade Gilchrist's game tying 21 yard field goal with 8 seconds left . Junior running back Braxton Carpenter (#11) shouldered the load on the ground with 32 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns, consistently fighting for extra yards against a tough Eagle defense. Through the air, Edgewood spread the ball around, with seniors Reece Roberts (#4) and Gunnar Perry (#10), sophomore Eli Lirot (#23), and junior Dylan Wickens (#88) all making key receptions to keep drives moving. The defining moment came in double overtime. South Putnam found the end zone first but failed on their 2-point conversion, opening the door for Edgewood. On the ensuing possession, the Mustangs faced 4th down when Linerode connected with Collier on a quick slant to tie the score. From there, junior kicker Kade Gilchrist (#3) stepped into the spotlight, calmly drilling the game-winning extra point that sent the Mustang sideline and home crowd into celebration. The defense also had its share of heroes, led by Perry's 19 total tackles, 3 pass break ups and 1 interception. Junior Lincoln Getts (#53) notched 11 tackles, 2 sack and 4 QB pressures and fellow classmates Dylan Wickens, Evan Enghauser and Maddox Beauchamp adding 11, 9 and 9 total tackles respectfully . Sophomore Tobias Connors (#24) adding 9 total tackles tackles and Rowan Heitink added 12 total tackles, 2 big hits and caused a fumble to help limit South Putnam’s high-powered attack. With the dramatic 31-30 victory, Edgewood improves to 3-0 for only the 2nd time in 25 years. Now, the Mustangs shift their focus to the most anticipated game of the season: a rivalry showdown with Owen Valley High School. The matchup will be held at Patriot Field in Spencer next Friday, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. Riding the momentum of their statement win, the Mustangs will look to carry their confidence, toughness, and late-game poise into another emotional battle under the lights.
